neil
curtis "XPS / COLORSPACED / PPS2 EXHIBITION" on 8th
of august 2006
july 2006
| Though the pictures shown in this exhibition shows the human body in the nude, it isn't about nude photography, but rather, it is about Neil Curtis' body paintings. They are no ordinary body paintings either. Does Neil Curtis make a sculpture out of the body, or is is all about its transformation? |

XPS: XPS stands for "experimental painting
sessions" and it's all about experimenting. is everything allowed? according to the
artist it's about experimenting with paint on the body and with the timescale: what
happens when you paint a body with one color, and then overpaint it with another? how does
it look like if you slowly paint a body with red paint, until no free space is left?
fastly the borders between performance, documentation and nude photography blend into each
other...
Colorspaced: the basis for this work are the countless black and
white photographs of the artist. in a digital process, the picture looses its black layer,
but comes back alive with a colorful new layer. This is reminiscent of the 60ies and 70ies
hippie area. Neil Curtis comments with a smile on his face: "That was a cool time.
Back then, people often had a much more relaxed relationship to nudity and their
body".
PPS 2 Public (Body) Painting Session: to see curtis' work on a photograph is one side of his art. but what would be more appropriate than exchanging the "dead surface" of a picture with the living one of a human body? to give back the three-dimensionallity to art, his second public painting session PPS2 will show how he turns a nude body into a painted one - just like on one of the countless subjects you can see in the exhibition!
the exhibition will be shown from 8th of august to 8th of september 2006
the performance takes place on
tuesday, 8th of august 2006 at 7 pm.
