stadtmensch (city person): "I sometimes sit in coffehouse with my notebook and work", says neil curtis. this isn't allowed everywhere, but when he's lucky the 28years old multimedia-artist finds a plug and a tolerant waiter. "I love the creative atmosphere of coffeehouses". neil curtis connects bodypainting with computer-art. "tribal tribute" is the name of his project, in which he wants to honour the US-artist keith haring that died 10 years ago. for his exhibition in the café berg (16.2.-10.3.) neil curtis has done several bodypainting-sessions in the style of haring and digitally photoraphed. "bodypainting is a very special body-experience. it can be quite excessive" in the last years he has already created 12 body-cult projects - always with male models: "there are enough artists around that do bodypainting with females. the people always think that sessions are orgys", neil curtis explains. "but that's not true. I have never had an orgy doing bodypainting". (C.W. / photo by K. Gossow)

another article can be found in the current issue (06/00) of vienna's city-magazine city. the article on page 6 includes a full page A4 photo shot by simone schmidt and descrives neil curtis and his tribal tribute project under the section "city power: people". interesting side-note: the article features a rating and rates neil curtis with 4 of 5 stars: outstanding.

neil curtis, a viennese multi media artist, honours the neo pop art hero keith haring on his 10th day of death by setting him a monument. "I want to remind people of the unique personality and skills haring had as an artist" was the remark of curtis. His tribute to haring who tragically died of AIDS consists of digitally taken, remastered, and reproduced pictures. for the exhibition named "tribal tribute" at café berg curtis immortalized haring's motives using a male body "following annie leibovitz' famous picture of painted keith haring". curtis is to be considered as a member of the new group of digitally creative artists who seem to play with of modern technical means and don't know any genre limits. he is as natural in taking pictures as he works as a graphical designer, as he composes music or outlines various installations and performances. "my central medium is the internet. the future musician won't be bound to a label any more. instead he'll be able to offer his music for download on the net. even for the fine arts the internet will gain importance as kind of an exchange platform."
